As a child, I often held rocks from my collection in the palm of my hand, wondering if I was holding a piece of the the very beginnings of our planet’s existence. I studied each line and color pattern, mesmerized by our world’s very first art medium. I began tumbling stones to uncover their secret beauty over twenty years ago. I still feel magic in every stone, mineral or crystal I hold. Each is a unique discovery, whether freshly from the tumbler or “in the raw.” My secret's out; I am an unapologetic earth science nerd who also loves crystals.

Our fascination with stones and crystals can be traced to ancient civilizations. Archeological digs suggest that humans were collecting unusual shaped rocks or minerals in prehistoric times. At the origins of humankind we appreciated them and kept them close, possibly as a talisman or just for their beauty. 

Crystals are still  commonly used in many religious rites and religions. Many practices believe crystals can alter low energy or  bad energy, release emotional blocks and transform a body’s aura.  I use them in my own meditative practice to name my intentions and put them outside of myself, into the Universe and into action. I do not expect them to bring true love to my door, make me rich over night or cure any of my ills - physical or emotional. I use them as a visual reminder of the goals I have set for myself, the issues I have acknowledged, and  to keep me on my chosen the path. 

Many people use the terms rock, mineral, crystal, stone, and gemstone interchangeably but these terms have specific meanings in science. (Serious nerd alert!)  A rock occurs when any two or more types of minerals become bonded together, forming a single solid comprised of several mineral types. While rock is made up of various minerals mashed together into a solid form, a mineral has an organized internal structure with a stable and repeating pattern which is why minerals often take on a defined crystal linear structure. They’re organic with a solid and stable chemical composition. In science “crystal,” refers to a mineral that has taken a crystalline form. Throughout this site, I'll use the “catch-all" term "crystal" to include all rocks, stones, and minerals offered at Intentions & Clover.
